Elderberry Wisdom Farm

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Elderberry Wisdom Farm

We are continuing to hold outdoor volunteer activity periodically at our two-acre farm. If you would like to volunteer, please let us know and we can include you in our internship activities. Most activities are weekdays since we are not available here on weekends. Our 501 (c)(3) Native American nonprofit is teaching Native Americans and others of all ages and ethnicities to learn more about restoring Native plant species in our local ecosystem. These volunteer activities help us provide educational outreach and awareness beyond our own Native internships.

Our small two-acre farm is just south of Salem near Sunnyside. At our events, we like to start with introductory greetings and a stretching circle. We are expanding our crop of Native plant species and continuing to develop, expand and prepare new garden beds in the coming seasons. We are also germinating and cultivating tree species native to the Willamette Valley and providing them to partners as part of our Urban Forestry project.

We then acquaint volunteers with current habitat restoration work on the property. It frequently involves manual removal of invasive species and the planting of addition of Native plant species, including the Native blue elderberry for which our farm is named. We also introduce our practices of restoring traditional First Foods, plus the importance of Traditional Ecological Knowledge principles. If you have questions about the volunteer activities, please feel free to contact us at rose@elderberrywisdom.org.

“Our volunteer activity with Rose enhanced knowledge we acquired from lecture, text, and field study this term about ecological communities: invasive species can overtake communities and disrupt long-established evolutionary relationships.”
