EWF’s seasonal interns learn how to cultivate, harvest, and market value-added elderberry products. Interns report learning how to respect plants and berries, express gratitude, harvest ethically from farms and native plant nurseries, and produce syrup and salve for health-conscious consumers in the community.
Interns also learn to perform patch tests to ensure they do not experience allergic reactions or skin sensitivity.
EWF has developed this social and economic project since 2020 when the elderberry patch was planted and Blue Elderberry Farm LLC was formed. The initiative has grown into a promising microenterprise. A feasibility study was completed in 2021, followed by business, marketing, and financial planning that has been refined over several years.
This process has helped establish a sustainable cottage business while demonstrating that Native American herbalists can develop successful enterprises with the potential for long-term and multi-generational prosperity.
