Habitat Restoration Using Traditional Ecological Knowledge Spring & Summer 2025

The Native American nonprofit, Elderberry Wisdom Farm is currently recruiting 2025 Interns who are pursuing conservation career pathways. This paid opportunity provides Native Americans and other interns an opportunity to receive culturally tailored habitat restoration training, experiential service learning, and mentoring which integrates Traditional Ecological Knowledge into local restoration practices, including urban forestry and native plant nursery development in the mid-Willamette Valley.
A $3,000 stipend will be provided for those completing the nine-week internship for a total of 190 hours of indoor classroom education and outdoor experiential service-learning activities. Spring trainings are held three days a week: March 31 - May 30, 2025 and Summer: June 23 - August 22.
A highlight of the internship is the emphasis upon Native American habitat restoration practices that integrate Traditional Ecological Knowledge principles, climate adaptation practices, and mentoring. The wide range of service-learning activities will help you learn to strengthen biodiversity and sustainability at our work sites in mid-Willamette Valley ecosystems, including wetlands, oak prairie, and urban forests, plus Elderberry Wisdom Farm’s four-acre native plant nursery and greenhouse south of Salem, OR.
Additional opportunities are available for interns motivated to continue their training following the conclusion of the internship. After completion of a second internship, you will have employment opportunities at EWF or become emerging owners and operators of the habitat restoration or native plant nursery businesses EWF is forming. In addition to urban forestry and agroforestry opportunities, you can also pursue organic farming, dry farming, and other practices that help strengthen Native American food sovereignty as well as social and economic resilience of Native families.
