My name is Michael Crain. I’m an enrolled Klamath Tribal member. I’m Klamath-Modoc on my dad’s side as well as Kickapoo-Sac and Fox on my mom’s side. I graduated Early College High School on the Chemeketa Community College campus in Salem and am currently attending the University of Oregon.
For the past few months, I’ve been working at Elderberry Wisdom Farm as one of eight Summer 2024 Habitat Restoration Interns. Together with my stellar cohort, along with the supreme guidance of Rose High Bear and Dr. Aaronda Mayo, have performed habitat restoration, identifying native plants, collecting their seeds, removing non-native invasive plants, removing non-native invasive ludwigia from the Willamette Slough and near the North Santiam River. We also had mentor-led classes where the cohort got to learn more about health, wellness, and resilience which for me, brought more connection to the work we did. This internship has been very educational for me. The knowledge and hands-on experience taught throughout is invaluable.
